Can You Freeze Dry Shrimp?
Yes. Shrimp freeze dries excellently — it is naturally low in fat, rehydrates quickly, and is popular in camping meals, seafood mixes and pet treats.
Freeze Drying Suitability
An excellent candidate. Its low fat content and firm protein make it store well and rehydrate fast, cooked or raw (cooked is best for ready meals).
How to Prepare It
Peel and, if desired, cook. Leave small shrimp whole or halve larger ones. Spread in a single layer.
Expected Texture
Light and firm when dry; rehydrates to a tender, springy texture close to fresh.
Storage
Seal in Mylar with an oxygen absorber. Its low fat gives shrimp an excellent long shelf life.
Rehydration
Rehydrates in minutes with warm water, or drop straight into soups, paella, stir-fries and pasta.
Common Problems
Very few. Overloading trays or leaving large shrimp whole can slow drying — keep pieces small and evenly spaced.
