Can You Freeze Dry Coffee?
Yes. Brewed coffee freeze dries excellently into premium instant coffee crystals.
Freeze Drying Suitability
This is an excellent freeze drying candidate. Coffee is water-based with no fat, so freeze drying preserves aroma better than heat-drying.
How to Prepare It
Brew strong, then pour a thin, even layer into a lined tray. Arrange everything in a single, even layer on the trays so it dries uniformly.
Expected Texture
Dry, brittle crystals that dissolve instantly in water.
Storage
Once fully dry, seal it in Mylar bags with an oxygen absorber and keep it cool, dark and dry. Because it is low in fat, properly sealed it stays shelf-stable for a very long time.
Rehydration
Add hot water to reconstitute a fresh-tasting cup.
Common Problems
Very few; brew stronger than usual since flavor concentrates.
